HOW TO WRITE A POSITION PAPER
A position paper is a document, written in an essay form, that briefly explains your country’s point of view about the topic to debate. It is crucial for every delegate to count with one in order to successfully develop ideas and solutions throughout the debate. A position paper will help to organize ideas, present unique, argument supported solutions, and establish credibility.
In order to write an effective position paper every delegate should have in consideration the following:
-Write identification information on the top left and corner (Topic, committee, country, school, and delegate's name).
-Use a three-section structure.
-Section 1: Includes a brief explanation of the topic to discuss, an introduction of the country, history concerning the issue, committee, and other countries. Try to answer: How did the issue begun in your country? How does it affects worldwide?
-Section 2: Includes an explanation of your country’ situation about the topic. It must contain statistics, laws, policies and justifications in your country, as well as actions taken by the government regarding the topic. Try to answer: What did the government of your country do to solve the problem? What does it currently do?
-Section 3: Includes proposal of solutions to solve the issue worldwide. These solutions must be original, helpful to address the issue, and well supported. They explain what your country would like to accomplish in the committee’s resolution. Try to answer: What actions does the government should take in order to solve the problem stated?
-Try to elaborate it as long as it would take you 90 seconds to read. Do not exceed two pages.
-Be concise and precise, this paper will help you base yourself in your speech; it is recommended only to write main ideas here and have an extra paper with more specific data.
-Use as many facts as you can.
